Medal of Honor (360) review

Medal of Honor was one of my most anticipated game of the year. I was looking forward to a game that gave Modern Warfare a run for its money. After playing the beta that was released late this past summer, I knew that the multiplayer had all of the basic features to make a great FPS, even with all of the glitches that plagued the beta. So how was the final game? I'll go ahead and start off discussing the multiplayer.

The multiplayer pulls everything off somewhat well. The level designs are decent and the gameplay creates a fun multiplayer experience. Also I love the way assists count towards your kill streak rewards and I hope more games take note of Medal of Honors system in how players achieve kill streak rewards. What's wrong with the multiplayer is that it is extremely off balanced. Guns are extremely over powered and create unfair advantages for low level players. Also some level designs have a flaw where teams can essentially back another team into a corner and just pick off them one by one as they spawn. The spawn points are also poor and I often found myself spawning on a teammate that was being attacked by an enemy.

The campaign also feels lacking. The story is forgettable and the first half of the game is about the same as any other modern war shooter that you've ever played. But then the second half of the campaign takes a turn for the better with a helicopter based mission and starts a very interesting mini story in the campaign. The game seems to really shine during the second half of the game, but when it just starts to pick up the game ends. The campaign for this game is very short and can be beaten in under 5 hours, but the game has an open ending that leads into the inevitable sequel.

One of my biggest problems with this game though is how the multiplayer and single player feel like two different games. There are some things that you are able to do in single player, such as slide into cover, that you are not able to do in multiplayer. Also you are not able to go prone in multiplayer which causes frustration if you are trying to hide behind cover.

All in all Medal of Honor has all of the basic features to make a great multiplayer and single player game. In the end the games seems to fall short with some level design and weapon design issues. The first half of the single player suffers from being too ordinary but the second half does make up for it. Hopefully the eventual sequel can fix the mistakes as I would love to take a step into a much improved sequel.

I give Medal of Honor a 7.5/10
